How drip irrigation works

Water is dripped onto the soil surface above the roots, or directly into the root zone. Growers often choose it over surface irrigation because it reduces evaporation.

Water reaches the roots through a series of pipes, tubes and valves. Emitters and pumps control these parts so that water goes exactly where it is needed.

Inside the tunnel

In the tunnel, plants are fed from dripper lines lying on the ground next to them. This keeps water management tight and wastage to a minimum.

Drip irrigation is the most efficient way to deliver water and nutrients to a crop. It puts them directly into the root zone, in the right amounts, at the right time, so each plant gets what it needs for good growth.

Plan your water

Make sure you have enough water for the project. A tunnel structure can use up to 2500 L of water a day in peak season.

Storage tanks beside the tunnel hold water and are used for mixing fertiliser before it goes into the drip system.
